This might spur a lively discussion, but what is your opinion of contrails? I frequently hear conspiracy theorists on late-night radio promote the idea that contrails (or chemtrails) are a chemical or biological dusting of the earth.

Thank you very much for your question. I know that every stick has two ends. This is a similar situation. On the one hand, indeed, these contrails are harmful to the environment, but on the other hand, they are the result of our defense system, without which we cannot exist. And, unfortunately, so far our scientists cannot offer anything better. Do you think it is better to live defenseless in a clean environment, or to have protection that has some side effects on the environment and try to find a solution to this problem?

I am not one of the conspiracy theorists as I understand that contrails are visible water vapor and completely harmless. It’s the same process as seeing your breath when it’s cold. The contrarian view is that the government is dusting the earth with chemical and biological agents. Of course, this would mean that commercial airliners are part of the conspiracy, but facts don’t seem to matter to the conspiracists.

I don’t want to argue with you about the dangers of contrails. I would like to know how to solve this problem. Should we use balloons instead of airplanes? Because even airships use engines that also pollute the environment.

I don’t deny the carbon pollution from a jet engine’s combustible exhaust, but only to make the distinction between that and the harmless ice crystals that we see in the form of a contrail.

Actually, I should correct myself because the largest volume of greenhouse gas is not carbon dioxide. It is water vapor — approximately 80-90% of the total atmospheric mass and volume — which accounts for most of the greenhouse effect of global warming. In effect, then, the contrail is a pollutant because it measurably increases the volume of water vapor in the form of clouds.

As for solving the problem of jet pollution, there is no viable solution except to design cleaner jet engines. Biofuels are cost prohibitive and cannot be stored because they tend to degrade. In any case, not enough biofuel could be synthesized to support the demands of global aviation. Electrification is on the horizon for smaller planes, but the batteries required to fly commercial aircraft are so bulky and heavy that it just isn’t feasible with current technology.

My original point, however, was not about any of this. I was referring to the conspiracy theorists who claim that governments around the world have conspired to spray biotoxins upon their citizens and food supply for the purpose of altering our genetic code and controlling the population. So the point of my question was not about contrails per se, but whether the government is spraying us with toxic chemicals.

I do not have an answer to your last question, because I am not an expert and do not have sufficient knowledge on this issue. But I definitely believe that the answer to this question should be given by a specialist, and not by politicians or people looking for cheap popularity.
